Abstract

746,021. Agglutinated fibrous sheet materials; laminated sheet materials. OWENS - CORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. July 24, 1951, No. 17561/51. Class 140. [Also in Group IX] A web of blast - attenuated mineral fibres such as glass is reinforced by one or more continuous glass fibre strands. The reinforcing strands may be doubled back and forth in irregular loops and coils, may be in parallel spaced arrangement, may be in regular sinuous arrangement, or a combination of these methods may be employed. A binding agent may be incorporated, e.g. by spraying. As shown, one or more strands 35, Fig. 1, are fed from bobbins 26 by compressed air feeding-nozzles 25 into a chamber 14 in which fine glass fibres are formed by the action of gaseous blasts from a blower 12 upon streams of molten glass from a feeder 10. The strands 35 fold back and forth in loops and coils as they fall among the descending glass fibres. The reinforced web is collected on a perforated conveyer 15 moving over a suction box 20. An adhesive may be sprayed on the web at 42 and further adhesive may be applied by passage of the web through a trough 47. The adhesive is dried or cured in an oven 50 through which heated air circulates. The air may be partly preheated by drawing it through the web at 57. The adhesive may be a gum, asphalt, coal tar, pitch, phenol - formaldehyde resin, rubber, starch, sugar, gelatin, polystyrene, or polymethyl methacrylate. Alternatively, glass fibres attenuated from one or more nozzles 100<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 12, fall through two or more chambers 109<SP>1</SP> for collection in superposed layers on a perforated conveyer belt 31<SP>11</SP>, the reinforcing strands being laid on a deposited layer of fibres by stationary or transversely reciprocating feeding devices 120<SP>1</SP> and covered by the next layer. Strands may be fed into one or more of the chambers 109<SP>1</SP> to fall in coils and loops, and adhesive may be sprayed into the chambers at 150. In a further arrangement, the blast-attentuated fibres fall through a chamber and collect around strands drawn from spools over a foraminous, endless conveyer belt passing over a suction box.
