[Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVII] An electric mixer is provided with an elongated handle having a bottom opening communicating with a cavity within the handle, an electric switch assembly being insertable into the cavity through the bottom opening. A motor casing 78, Fig. 6, which is preferably a die casting such as a magnesium die casting but which may alternatively be moulded in plastic, is open at the front end against which abuts a cup-shaped housing 102 in which beaters 122, Fig. 1, are mounted. In the handle 35 a cavity 34 receives an electric control switch 37 having the various switch elements (see Group XXVII) mounted upon a flat insulating plate 39 which is located in grooves 34c and 34d in the front and rear walls of the cavity 34, the plate 39 being retained in the cavity 34 by a resilient plate 76, Fig. 15, fastened by screws 76a to the handle 35. A channel 154 is defined between a shoulder 131 on the handle 35 and the edge portions of the plate 76. The casing 78 and housing 102 define an opening having flanges 78c and 102a on the casing 78 and housing 102 respectively, which flanges upon assembly of the casing 78 and housing 102, are inserted into the channel 154 springing the projecting edge portions of the plate 76 downwardly to secure the handle in assembled position. The conductors 64 between the contacts of the switch 37 and tappings on the motor field winding pass through the opening defined by the flanges 78c, 102a and are supported by a portion 77 of the plate 76 which extends into the casing 78. A switch control arm 40, provided with a finger-operated control knob 42, extends through an elongated opening 35b in the top of the handle. The motor field 87 is secured by elongated studs Fig. 7 (not shown), which also serve to secure a brush plate 93 and a closure plate 85 at the open end of the casing 78. The motor shaft 81 is journalled in a rear bearing 80 in the housing 78 and in a front bearing 86 in the closure plate 85, through which a lubricating channel extends to an oil hole in the casing 78. The mixer is cooled by a fan 99 which draws air in through a rear inlet 101 and discharges it through vents in the plate 76 to outlets 101a, Fig. 1, in the handle 35. The beaters 122 are mounted in the recessed lower ends of a pair of driving shafts, the upper ends of which extend into a gear chamber 114 defined by walls 103, 104 in the housing 102 and the closure plate 85. The driving shafts carry worm gears 117 preferably of nylon which engage a worm 119 which is an integral extension of the motor shaft 81. The gear chamber 113 is filled with lubricant. Each beater 122 has a spring retaining means located in a groove in its shank engageable with a co-operating groove in the recess in the driving shaft to detachably retain the beater shank within the recess. A beater ejecting device consists of a tiltable washer 128 positioned on the beater spindle between a collar 129 and a sleeve 130. The handle 35 and a pair of fins 134 protruding from the rear of the housing 78 form a threelegged support for the mixer.
