Abstract

A soil-conditioning composition comprises a water-soluble high polymeric polyelectrolyte produced by polymerization of one or more ethylenically unsaturated compounds and a compound or compounds containing at least two of the plant nutrients nitrogen, phosphate, or potassium, but substantially free from nitrates, chlorides, and sulphates. In a modification, the composition may include nitrates, but in these circumstances there is present in the composition at least four times by weight of phosphate, calculated as phosphorous pentoxide, as nitrate. The composition may contain water. The expression "water-soluble" means true solutions in either distilled or soil water and also includes polymers which swell and disperse in water. The polymer may be a copolymer of maleic anhydride, maleic acid, a salt of maleic acid, e.g. an alkali, alkaline earth, or ammonium salt, with vinyl acetate, vinyl alkyl ethers, vinyl chloride, or isobutylene, or a polymer or copolymer of acrylic or methacrylic acid, or their alkali, alkaline earth, or ammonium salts. Specified polymers are partial calcium salts of a copolymer of vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride, the ammonium salts of a copolymer of isobutylene and maleic acid, the potassium salts of copolymers of vinyl alkyl ethers and maleic acid, polyacrylic acid, the alkali, e.g. sodium, ammonium, and alkaline earth, e.g. calcium, salts of polyacrylic acid and hydrolysed polyacrylonitrile. Plant nutrients mentioned are mono- and di-ammonium orthophosphates, potassium, sodium, and calcium, mono-, di-, and tri-orthophosphates, ammonium carbonate, ammonium bicarbonate, ammonium hydroxide, ammonium and potassium metaphosphates, mono-, di- and tetra - ammonium pyrophosphates, tetrasodium and tetrapotassium pyrophosphates, the double salt of monopotassium and mono-ammonium orthophosphates, urea, urea metaphosphate, urea orthophosphate, urea pyrophosphate, calcium, ammonium and potassium sulphates, calcium nitrate tetrahydrate, ammonium, potassium, and sodium nitrates, and potassium chloride. The compositions also function as fertilizers. Specifications 730,463, 730,464, 731,052, 734,504, 734,714 and 745,415 are referred to.ALSO:A soil-conditioning fertilizer composition comprises a water-soluble high polymeric polyelectrolyte obtained or derived from the polymerization of one or more ethylenically unsaturated compounds and a fertilizer containing at least two of the plant nutrients, nitrogen, phosphate or potassium, but substantially free from nitrates, chlorides and sulphates. In a modification, the composition may include nitrates but in these circumstances there is present in the composition at least four times by weight of phosphate, calculated as phosphorous pentoxide, as nitrate. The composition may be used as a solution in water. The expression "water-soluble" means true solutions in either distilled water or soil water and also includes polymers which swell and disperse in water. Specified polymers are partial calcium salts of a copolymer of vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride, the ammonium salt of a copolymer of isobutylene and maleic acid, the potassium salt of copolymers of vinyl alkyl ethers and maleic acid, polyacrylic acid, the alkali, e.g. sodium, ammonium, and alkaline, e.g. calcium, salts of polyacrylic acid and hydrolysed polyacrylonitrile. Plant nutrients mentioned are mono-and di-ammonium orthophosphates, potassium, sodium and calcium mono-, di-, and tri-orthophosphates, ammonium carbonate ammonium bicarbonate, ammonium hydroxide, ammonium and potassium metaphosphates, mono-, di-, and tetra-ammonium pyrophosphates, tetrasodium and tetrapotassium pyrophosphate, the double salt of monopotassium and mono-ammonium orthophosphates, urea, urea metaphosphate, urea orthophosphate, urea pyrophosphate, calcium, ammonium and potassium sulphate, calcium nitrate tetrahydrate, ammonium, potassium, and sodium nitrate, potassium chloride and mixtures. Specified mixtures are (1) mono-potassium phosphate, dipotassium phosphate and urea; (2) diammonium phosphate, mono-potassium phosphate and urea; (3) potassium pyrophosphate, disodium dihydrogen pyrophosphate, and urea; (4) monopotassium and monosodium phosphate, ammonium nitrate and urea; and (5) diammonium phosphate, monopotassium and monosodium phosphate, potassium nitrate, and urea. The composition may be used for treating sown seeds, plants, and newly planted sets. The composition may be applied as the seeds are being planted, e.g. from a seed-planting machine equipped with storage tanks for the composition. Specifications 730,463, 730,464, 731,052, 734,504, 734,714, [Group IV (a)], and 745,415 are referred to.
