744,022. Washing and drying machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Sept. 4, 1953 [Sept. 4, 1952], No. 24523/53. Class 138 (2). [Also in Groups XIII, XXIV and XXV] A clothes washing and/or drying machine having a .spin basket 3 driven by an electric motor is provided with a switch 19 having its normally open contacts included in the energizing circuit of the motor and moved to closed position when the cover 8 of the machine is closed so that the spin basket is driven only when the cover is closed, and means for locking the cover in its closed position comprising a locking lever 10 co-operating with a hook-like member 12 secured to the cover 8, electrical operating means energized when the motor circuit is closed for moving the lever 10 to engage the hook like member 12 to lock the cover in its closed position, and means to delay the return of the locking lever to its unlocking position when the motor circuit is interrupted and the electrical operating means thereby de-energized, the delay being such as to prevent unlocking of the cover until the spin basket stops or substantially stops rotating. In the example shown the lever 10 is pivoted in a flexible grommet 11 and is operated by a bimetallic strip 14 which is influenced by a heating winding 17 in the motor circuit. The heating capacity of the winding 17 is such that locking takes place within seconds of closing the motor circuit, but the cover is held locked until the strip 14 cools down, this being the time required for the basket to come to a stop. In another example (Fig. 4, not shown), the locking lever is operated by a solenoid against the action of a spring, return movement of the lever being retarded by an adjustable dashpot device.
