Abstract

The invention comprises coeramidonine pigment dyestuffs of the formula:- <FORM:0743509/IV(c)/1> wherein one or more of the remaining a -positions of the anthraquinone residue may be substituted by N-(benz-11-benzanthronyl)-amino groups, those in 4- or 5-position forming a coeramidonine ring with the oxygen atom in position 9, and wherein the benzanthrone portions of the molecule may be substituted by one or more halogen atoms and the anthraquinone portions of the molecule may have further substituents, except acylamino groups, and/or may have a thiazole ring condensed thereon. They are made by treating a 1-N-(benz-11-benzanthronyl) - aminoanthraquinone free from acylamino groups with a metal halide, a melt thereof in an alkali metal salt, or with concentrated sulphuric acid at a temperature of from room temperature up to 220 DEG C., and acid-pasting or grinding the reaction product. The products are used for dyeing paper, dyeing viscose during spinning brown or orange shades, and printing textiles. In examples the following are condensed with sulphuric acid, acid-pasted, ground, and worked up into pastes or powders, sometimes with a dispersing agent:-(1) 1-N-(benz-11-benzanthronyl)-aminoanthraquinone or its 6, 7-dichlor-, 5-amino- or 2-methyl derivatives; (2) 1.8 or 1.5- or a mixture of 1.5- and 1.8-di-N.N-(benz-11-benzanthronyl)-amino - anthraquinone; (3) 1-N-(61-bromo-benz-11-benzanthronyl) -aminoanthraquinone; (4) 5-N-(benz-11-benzanthronyl) - amino-1.9-isothiazolanthrone. Also in examples (5) 1-N-(benz-11-benzanthronyl) aminoanthraquinone is condensed with aluminium chloride in nitrobenzene. Alternative starting materials are listed.
