Abstract

The invention comprises 11-ketopregnane-3 : 20-diketals of the general formula <FORM:0743486/IV(a)/1> wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing from one to six carbon atoms and n is either one or two. The compounds may be prepared by reacting pregnane-3 : 11 : 20-trione with an alkane-1 : 2- or -1 : 3-diol in the presence of an acid ketalization catalyst and preferably in an organic solvent. In an example, pregnance-3 : 11 : 20-trione, and ethylene glycol are refluxed in benzene with p-toluene sulphonic acid to produce pregnane-3 : 11 : 20-trione-3 : 20-ethylene glycol diketal. Further examples in which ethylene glycol is replaced by propane-1 : 2-diol; octane-1 : 2-diol; propane-1 : 3-diol; and butane-1 : 3-diol; are given. Specification 743,487 is referred to.
