Abstract

743,251. Dynamo-electric machines. FALREY AVIATION CO., Ltd. Oct. 27, 1953 [Oct. 27, 1952; Oct. 20, 1953], Nos. 26965/52 and 28999/53. Class 35. [Also in Groups XXXVIII and XL (c)] A rate-of-turn gyroscope includes a dynamoelectric generator, the generator rotor forming a part of the gyro-rotor and its stator being secured to the support for the gyro-frame so that the voltage generated in a function of the angle of deflection of the frame relative to the support and hence of the rate of turn, and its frequency is a measure of the rotor speed. Gyro-generator construction, Figs. 1, 2. Two wind-driven gyro-rotors 10 are mounted in respective frames 11 each of which is deflectable about an axis D-D under the constraint of a torsion bar 17 in the casing support 16. The deflection axes D-D of the respective gyros are perpendicular so that rate of turn about two axes C-C perpendicular to both the axes D-D and R-R (the rotor axes) are measured by the respective generator outputs. Each rotor 10 has an inset disc-shaped permanent magnet 26 magnetized diametrally and rotated within a coil 27 carried by an insulating ring 29 secured by legs 30 to the casing. A ferro-magnetic cylindrical shell 32 completes the magnetic circuit. Normally, i.e. with the torsion bar unstrained, the corresponding magnet 26 and coil 27 are co-planar giving zero output, strain of the torsion bar proportional to the rate of turn, yielding a corresponding output. To determine the sense of the rate of turn, the coil 27 may be mounted obliquely to produce a datum voltage at zero rate of turn, this voltage then increasing or decreasing according to the sense of the rate of turn. Two such coils mounted obliquely in opposite sense so as to yield respective datum voltages of equal magnitude but opposite phase may be connected in opposition to produce the output signal which is zero at zero rate of turn and varies in magnitude and phase sense according to the magnitude and sense of the rate of turn. In a modification, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), each rotor magnet co-operates with two pairs of solenoids woimd on two U- shaped cores the reluctance of the two magnetic circuits varying differentially with the rate of turn.
