Abstract

The invention comprises di-sulphydryl alkylene diamine polycarboxylic acids and their salts of formula: <FORM:0742996/IV(a)/1> in which alkylene is <FORM:0742996/IV(a)/2> ; A is hydrogen or -CH2COOM and M is hydrogen, NH4, K, Na or an amine. These compounds are water-soluble chelating agents for alkaline earth metals and for the transitional metals Fe, Co, Ni, Mn and Zn. The di-sulphydryl ethylene diamine dicarboxylic acid is produced in alkaline pH aqueous solution by reacting two molar weights of the alkali metal salt of cysteine with one molar weight of an ethylene dihalide in alkaline solution. The corresponding propylene <FORM:0742996/IV(a)/3> or trimethylene (-CH2.CH2.CH2-) disulphydryl compound may be obtained similarly by using the corresponding dihalide. The disulphydryl ethylene diamine tetracarboxylic acid is produced from the dicarboxylic acid by reacting it with sodium cyanide and formaldehyde. If desired the tricarboxylic acid may be obtained by displacing only one of the amino hydrogens with a carboxymethyl group. Specification 600,629 is referred to.
