Abstract

Bodies, e.g. vehicle bodies, are supported by rotatable mountings on a conveyer which traverses them continuously in succession past paint spraying means directed towards the path of travel of the bodies at a painting station, mechanism being provided for rotating each body about an axis parallel with its path of traverse, each such mechanism being adapted to co-act with fixed means as the associated body is passing the paint spraying means to cause actuation of the mechanism. As shown in Figs. 1-4, a carriage I-beam 16 is supported by a pair of dollies 11 and 12 on an overhead I-beam 10, along which the dollies are driven by a conveyer chain 15. Hangers 17 and 18, depending from the I-beam 16, rotatably support a spit mounting 19, on which a body 20 is bolted. A front beam 25 is supported by the I-beam 10 by transverse beams 21 and vertical beams 22, and these together with corresponding rear beams, form a frame which supports mechanism for effecting, through a shaft 29, interaction between successive carriages and the paint gun control cams (Fig. 8). A vertical shaft 35, rotatably mounted on each carriage, is in driving engagement with the spit mounting 19 through bevel gears 36 and 37 and carries <PICT:0742859/III/1> <PICT:0742859/III/2> <PICT:0742859/III/3> <PICT:0742859/III/4> <PICT:0742859/III/5> at its upper end an indexing gear assembly comprising a large gear 38, indexing rollers 39 and 40 mounted diametrically opposite each other thereon and an upper guide roller 41. The gear 38 is adapted to engage a fixed rack 42, mounted on the rear longitudinal beam, thereby causing the split mounting 19 to rotate; prior to such engagement the gear 38 is indexed to one of two rotary positions, in either of which the spit mounting and target body are vertical, by the engagement of the indexing gears 39, 40 with a fixed cam 43. A guide cam 44 engages the roller 41. As the gear 38 leaves the rack 42, the rollers 39 and 40 engage a cam 45 to ensure that the target body leaves the painting station in a vertical position. An endless chain 60, passing around sprockets 53, 54 supported on vertical beams 22, carries three evenly spaced dogs 61 for engagement with driving lugs 62 welded to successive front dollies 12, and is guided by slotted guideways 63 and 64. The lower guideway 64 is in two stepped sections divided by a block 67 having a S-slot therein, at which a dog 61 is disengaged from the associated lug 62, leaving the next dog 61 in position for engagement by the lug 62 on the following carriage. A sprocket 52 is mounted on the same shaft as the sprocket 53, and is connected by a chain 69 to a sprocket 68, which drives the shaft 29 through bevel gears 70, 71. The shaft 29 drives the camshaft 74 through bevel gears 72, 73, the arrangement being such that the advancement of the chain 60 by any given lug 62 turns the camshaft 74 through one complete revolution. The camshaft 74 (Fig. 8) has slidably keyed thereto a sleeve 75 carrying a hexagonal slotted drum comprising radial bracers 76, longitudinal members 77 and flanges 78 on which are bolted cam segments 79, forming a series of control cams. The sleeve 75 may be moved longitudinally with respect to the shaft 74 by means of a yoke, linkage, speed reducer and crank handle (not shown). A sleeve 91 is mounted for rotation in bearings 90, and a shaft 92 having a spur gear attached to one end and a sprocket 94 to its other end, is rotatably contained therein. An adjustable cam follower 95 having roller 120 following on cam 79 is pivoted at one end to a lug 97 on the sleeve 91 and at the other to a link 96 which is pivoted to a fixed base member. An L-shaped arm 100 is secured to the sleeve 91, and the paint gun bracket 101 is rotatably mounted on its outer end. The gun tilting linkage is controlled by a reciprocating cam follower (not shown) the lower end of which comprises a rack engaging the spur gear on the shaft 92 to rotate the same. A chain 107 is attached at one end to the sprocket 94 and its other end passes around a sprocket 108 and a sprocket 109 attached to the paint gun bracket 101, and is connected by a spring 110 to an adjustable stud 111 on the arms 100. A further reciprocating cam follower operates mechanism controlling the air supply to the paint guns. All three cam followers have keying fins 121 rigidly attached thereto. These normally fit in slots in a keying bar 122 depending from a link 86 of the mechanism for shifting the sleeve 75, but at a given position of the cams 79 (corresponding to the time between painting operations) are lifted out of these slots by high portions 123 (which may be interconnected by a bar) on the cams 79, thus permitting the sleeve 75 to be moved so that a fresh set of cams may be bought into operation. Specification 732,534 is referred to.
