Abstract

742,725. Moulding shoe uppers. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., BAGSHAW, C. M., and KIRK, L. D. Feb. 26, 1954 [Feb. 27, 1953], No. 5489/53. Class 17 (1). A machine for moulding toe end portions of shoe uppers while unsupported by a last comprises an outer mould 7 over which the upper is placed, an inner mould 46, a member 17 for holding the upper against the outer mould prior to the commencement of moulding, means for effecting relative movement between the inner and outer moulds to press the upper into the outer mould, and means for positioning the upper relatively to the outer mould. Means are provided to move the outer mould towards the member 17 yieldingly to clamp the upper, the subsequent relative movement between the moulds causing the upper to slip from between the member 17 and the outer mould. The upper may be positioned by means engaging an outer edge of the toe portion, or the throat portion, of the upper. The outer mould 7 is adjustable forwardly and rearwardly, by a screw 13, on a supporting plate 5 which has four pins 3 slidably mounted in a bed plate 1 supported on a yieldingly supported post. The clamping plate 17 is secured to spindles 19 having reduced parts 21 slidable in plate 1, and is urged downwardly by springs 23, the tension of which may be adjusted by means of nuts 27. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, wherein the upper is introduced from the rear of the moulds, the upper positioning members 31 are pivoted at 29 and adjusted by means of screws 34, marks 37 on plate 17 assisting the operator to adjust members 31 and position the upper. Mould 7 is raised on plate 5 to clamp the upper margin against plate 17 by means of arms 39 on a shaft 41 which is rotated by means of a hand lever 43. The machine is then started, whereupon the inner mould 46, which is preferably heated, is moved downwardly to shape the upper. After a time sufficient for the upper to set in its moulded condition the machine is again started to return the inner mould. The outer mould is then returned by means of the hand lever 43. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, wherein the upper is presented from the front of the moulds, the toeward portion of the throat 65 of the upper 63 is engaged by an interchangeable template 61 received on pins 59 on a block 51 adjustable by means of slot 55, screw 53, and nut 57 on a bracket 47 secured to the front of plate 1. Specification 525,288, [Group VIII], is referred to.
