Abstract

A coating composition for application to surfaces of steel, other ferrous metals, zinc, aluminium or alloys thereof comprises an acid metal phosphate, phosphoric acid and a solution of a thermally-settable modified phenol-formaldehyde resin which has been prepared in the presence of an initially basic phosphate (e.g. sodium hexametaphosphate or tetrasodium pyrophosphate), said metal phosphate being adapted to react with a metal surface to which the composition is applied to form an insoluble phosphate layer thereon and also to act with said phosphoric acid as a thermo-setting catalyst during stoving. Specified modifying agents are natural resin, abietic acid or esters therefrom with or without the addition of glycerol, ethylene glycol or penta-erythritol. The composition is compatible with oil-modified alkyd resins and may be loaded with fillers and pigments. In examples (1) phenol, formaldehyde and methyl abietate are heated in presence of a catalyst comprising ammonia and sodium hexametaphosphate. The alkalinity of the catalyst is reduced during the course of the reaction due to conversion of the sodium hexametaphosphate to a neutral or slightly acid orthophosphate. Water is then removed from the mixture, acetone added and condensation arrested by addition of an acidifying agent comprising distilled water, phosphoric acid, manganous hydrogen phosphate and ethylene glycol mono ethyl ether. Condensation is then completed by heating. (2) Phenol and formaldehyde are heated in presence of ammonia and sodium hexametaphosphate, water is removed, and then a mixture of rosin, ethylene glycol and acetone added. The temperature is then adjusted to 70 DEG C., the acidifying agent of example (1) added and condensation completed by heating. Specification 661,952 is referred to.ALSO:Surfaces of steel, other ferrous metals, zinc, zinc alloys, aluminium or aluminium alloys are protected by applying to them a composition of a thermosetting modified phenol-formaldehyde resin (see Group IV(a)), an acid metal phosphate and phosphoric acid and thereafter stoving. During stoving the metal is etched and converted into the metal phosphate, a layer of microcrystalline metal phosphates is deposited on the surface, and a layer of resin is deposited on top of the phosphate layer. Specification 661,952 is referred to.
