Abstract
742,333. Aerials. BREVETS AERO-MECANIQUES SOC. ANON. May 31, 1954 [July 22, 1953], No. 20347/53. Class 40 (7). [Also in Groups XI, XX and XXI] Pedals 13, Figs. 3, 4, mounted on a turntable 7 rotatable on a central pivot 3 on a base 1, under the thrust and control of the operator's feet effect the training of a radar aerial mounted on the turntable. According to the invention the base 1 has a fixed circular track 29 coaxial with the training pivot 3 and journalled on the pivot 3 is a pair of arms 19 extending radially in opposite directions to the track 29, each arm being loaded by a spring 22 to a given angular position relative to the turntable and each arm having a shoe 28 to engage against the track 29 to provide a fixed point from which the turntable can be turned under thrust transmitted through connecting means from one of the pedals 13 respectively. The transmission of pedal pressure to the shoe 28 may be hydraulic but, as shown, it comprises a cam lever 17 pivoted in the arm 19 to bear on the shoe and a connecting-rod 16 universally jointed to the cam lever 17 and pedal 13. The shoe 28 is urged by a spring 31 away from the track 29. Two helical torsion springs 22 are coiled around a spacer ring 21 on the pivot 3, one for each arm 19, the ends of each spring crossing one another and anchoring circumferentially in opposite directions against axial pins 23, 24 on the turntable 7 and arm 19 respectively. The spring 22 thus tends to maintain the arm 19 in a given position relative to the turntable 7 in which the pins 23, 24 are radially aligned and also acts on the pedal 13 tending to maintain it in the vertical position, in which position the shoe 28 is clear of the track 29. Initial thrust on the pedal applies the shoe 28 against the track 29 fixing the arm 19 relatively to the base 1 and continued thrust on the pedal turns the whole training structure until the pedal meets an abutment 15, Fig. 2 (not shown). On release of the pedal, the shoe 28 is spring-urged from the track 29 and allows the arm 19 to follow up the training structure under the increased torsion of the spring 22 and the pedal is returned to vertical position. A further thrust can then be applied. The opposed faces of the shoes 28 and track 29 may be simple friction surfaces or their interengagement made more positive by the provision of serrations.
