Abstract

Fluoroalkyl vinyl ethers of the formula <FORM:0742083/IV(a)/1> where R is H or methyl and R1 is a fluorine substituted alkyl radical are polymerized to form resins useful in making coatings and films. Specified monomers are trifluoroisopropyl, 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl, 2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropyl and 2,2,3,3,4,4,4 - heptafluorobutyl vinyl ethers.ALSO:The invention comprises fluoroalkyl vinyl ethers of the formula <FORM:0742083/IV(a)/1> in which R represents methyl or H, and R1 represents fluorine substituted methyl, or a fluorine substituted alkyl radical having at least two carbon atoms. These are prepared by reacting a fluoralkanol with acetylene at elevated temperature and under pressure in the presence of a corresponding alkali metal fluoroalkanolate. Preferably the fluoralkanol is treated with an alkali metal in a solvent such as ether, and after removal of the ether, the resulting mixture is vinylated with acetylene. The alkali metal hydroxides may also be used to produce the fluoroalkanolates but the water thus introduced must be removed prior to vinylation. The products find use as inhalant anaesthetics, solvents and intermediates. They may be subjected to bromination to form bromine addition products or may be polymerized. In examples (1) trifluoroisopropanol is added to a suspension of potassium in ether, the mixture is charged into a bomb, after removal of ether, heated to 150 DEG and acetylene is introduced under pressure to give trifluoroisopropyl vinyl ether, on fractional distillation; (2) 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol is reacted as in (1) to give 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl vinyl ether; (3) 2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoro propanol is reacted as in (1) to give 2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropyl vinyl ether; (4) 2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutanol is similarly treated to give 2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutyl vinyl ether.
