Abstract
741,902. Inking-apparatus. McCORQUODALE COLOUR DISPLAY, Ltd. Aug. 3, 1954 [Aug. 12, 1953], No. 22266/53. Class 100 (2). [Also in Group XXVIII] A pump for delivery of a succession of similar amounts of liquid material, e.g. ink, to a matrix 1 for deposit on a sheet 4 comprises a barrel having a receiving chamber connected to a source of supply of the liquid material and a delivery chamber communicating with an outlet; flow of liquid between the two chambers being controlled by a non-return valve member. The barrel 15 (Fig. 2) is plugged at both ends by plugs 17 and 18, the plug 17 being connected to a liquid supply tube 8 and the plug 18 being slidably mounted around a fixed delivery tube 19 having inlet holes 32 and capillary outlets 21. The tube 19 is surrounded by a washer 33 adapted to abut on shoulders 34 of the plug 18. The receiving chamber 30 is formed in the plug 17 and may be sealed off from the delivery chamber 31 by a non-return cone valve member 26 slidably mounted around a vent pipe 22 extending up from the tube 19. Between the valve 26 and a cap 23 on the tube 19 is a helical component spring 28. Nuts 36 enable the barrel 15 to be connected with a rising and falling plate 6. In operation the pump is initially in the position shown and as the plate 6 moves downwardly the flow of liquid from the receiving chamber 30 to the delivery chamber 31 is prevented by the valve 26. Upon further downward movement of the barrel 15 the liquid in the chamber 31 forces the washer 33 downwardly to allow the liquid to be forced through the holes 32 down the tube 19 and through outlets 21, air in the cavity 2, and any surplus liquid being forced up the vent 22 by displacement of a ball valve 25. As the barrel 15 is subsequently raised the shoulders 34 raise the washer 33 to re-close the holes 32 and the valve 26 permits liquid to flow again from the chamber 30 to the chamber 31. In a further embodiment (Fig. 5) the barrel 15 comprises a main cylinder 38 and a secondary cylinder 40. The cylinder 38 is provided with an elongated annular recess 45. Slidably mounted within the cylinder 38 is a tube 58 communicating with the liquid supply and carrying a valve member having a body portion 56, the lower end of which is provided with a plurality of circumferentially distributed notches 61 and the upper sleeve portion 57 of which is provided with a number of circumferential grooves 59. The cylinder 40 is provided with a plurality of capillary outlets 47 arranged to discharge tangentially of the pump and with a spring metal diaphragm 53 adapted to abut against the lower edge of the cylinder 38. In operation, when the tube 48 is raised from the position shown, ink flows from the supply around the valve body portion 56 owing to the annular recess 45. As the tube 58 is lowered the portion 56 of the valve seals off the liquid supply and forces the liquid over the diaphragm 53 and through the outlets 47, displaced air and surplus liquid being forced up a vent 49 controlled by a ball valve 52. In a modification the base of the pump may itself form the matrix (Fig. 10, not shown).
