741,896. Printing-machines; feeding webs. CRANSTON PRINT WORKS CO. June 15, 1953 [June 21, 1952], No. 16385/53. Classes 100(1) and 100(2). A rotary web-printing machine comprises a main frame, an impression cylinder rotatably mounted on the main frame, a printing roller having an axis parallel to that of the impression cylinder mounted in the sub-frame for rotational and axial movement thereto, pressure operated means for urging the sub-frame radially towards the impression cylinder, a printing-roller driving-gear mounted on the main frame, means for moving the printing cylinder axially of the sub-frame, and means including a printing-roller gear movable axially relatively to the driving gear and a plurality of gears interconnecting the driving gear and printing- roller gear for driving the printing roller. As shown, an impression cylinder 4, Fig. 3, rotatably mounted on a shaft 6, has one or more intaglio printing rollers 8 rotatably mounted with each of their axes parallel to that of the shaft 6. Each roller 8 has at each end a piston rod 17 and a piston 16, the pistons being slidable in cylinders 14 supplied with hydraulic liquid through pipes 18 to adjust the printing- pressure between the cylinders 4 and rollers 8. Each roller 8 is adjustable axially of the cylinder 4, to obtain correct lateral registration by a pinion 88, Fig. 4, engaging a gear 78 threaded on a spindle 76 attached to an arm 74 having a sleeve 72 slidable in a sub-frame 3. The sleeve 72 carries bearings 10 for the shaft 12 of the roller 8, Fig. 3. Each roller 8, Fig. 3, is driven through a pinion 52 engaging a pinion 50 driven by a motor 30 and pinion 48. Each pinion 52 drives pinions 54, 64 and 66 mounted in links 56, 68 and 70 respectively. A quadrant 58 engaging a rotatable worm 60 rolls pinion 54 around 52, thus rotating pinions 64 and 66 and the roller 8 about its own axis independently of the cylinder 4 to effect peripheral registration of the roller 8 with respect to a web 20 being printed. The impression cylinder is driven through an internal gear 46, pinion 44 and differential gear 40 by the motor 30. Feeding webs; drying applications of.-A second motor 136 drives drying drums 120 through a differential 138 also driven by the motor 30. The motor 136 is controlled as to speed and direction of rotation by a dancer roller 122 operating a rheostat 132 controlling an amplifier 134 which supplies power to the motor 136. Thus, by stopping the motor 30 a length of web 20 may be drawn out of the machine between the drum 120 and printing rollers 8, the motor 136 then being driven in reverse due to tension acting on the roller 122.
