741,713. Surface and outline gauges; gauging surface roughness. KOHAUT, A. Dec. 8, 1953, No. 34093/53. Class 106 (2). An apparatus for testing balls for roundness and/or surface defects, comprises two cylindrical rollers 1, 2 for supporting a ball 3 under test, means for causing the ball 3 to be rotated about two axes perpendicular to one another, and gauging means acting along an axis passing through the centre of the ball and perpendicular to the two axes of rotation. As shown, the rollers 1, 2 and an upper roller 4 all rotate in the same direction about their respective longitudinal axes to cause the ball 3 to rotate about an axis perpendicular to the paper. The roller 4 is also moved axially relative to the rollers 1 and 2 to cause the ball 3 to rotate about an axis a-a. Any vertical displacement of the roller 4 is a measure of deviation from the true form for the ball. By use of electronic measurement of the movements of the third cylindrical roller in the measuring direction, the components which originate from surface roughness may be separated by screening from those which arise from macrogeometric defects in shape.
