Abstract

741,649. Television pick-up tubes. PYE, Ltd. Sept. 8, 1952 [Sept. 6, 1951], No. 19476/54. Divided out of 741,592, [Group XL (b)]. Class 39 (1). Relates to a television pick-up tube of the image iconoscope type described in Specification 656,069 comprising a photo-cathode 6 and a target electrode 8 which is scanned by means of a beam of electrons released by a flying spot scanner 1 scanning the photo-cathode. According to the invention an electron multiplier 22 is provided facing the photo-cathode so as to be responsive to the electron emission therefrom. A second electron multiplier 21 faces the target electrode. The tube may be operated either as a conventional storage tube or as a photocell. For operation as a storage tube a scene 16 is projected on to the photo-cathode and the flying spot scanner is arranged to scan the same area as that occupied by the scene. The stored charges produced on the target 8 are discharged in turn by the scanning beam of electrons released by the flying spot scanner and the discharge current, which constitutes the image signal, is fed to the amplifier 14 through the electron multiplier 21. For operation as a photo-cell, a transparency, such as kinema film 17, is inserted in the light beam from the flying spot scanner 1 and the output signal is derived through amplifier 19 from the photo-emission received from the photo-cathode by electron multiplier 22. During such operation, coil 10 employed normally for focusing the electron image on the target 8 is preferably not energized. According to a further feature of the invention, the target 8 and its associated signal plate 9 are made semi-transparent, whereby light from an image may be projected on to the rear of the photo-cathode alternatively or simultaneously with the light from image 16. The electron multipliers may be constructed as described' in Specification 721,943. Apparatus incorporating the pick-up tube and arranged to be operated either as a flying- spot scanner or a storage-type pick-up device forms one subject of Specification 741,592, [Group XL (b)].
