Abstract

740,808. Rotary cylindrical valves. GLENS ENGINEERING WORKS (PTY.), Ltd. May 9, 1952 [May 19, 1951; July 11, 1951], No. 11797/52. Class 135. A plug cock comprises a body 1 of rigid material having inlet and outlet passages 2, 3, a hollow plug 4 also of rigid material rotatable in the inlet passage and having its hollow interior open to the outlet passage 3, one or more apertures 10 in the wall of the plug, a sleeve 11 of rubber or similar resilient material surrounding the plug, an annular chamber surrounding the sleeve, and an aperture 15 in the sleeve adapted to register with the aperture or apertures 10 on rotation of the plug. The sleeve 11 has flanges 12, 13 between which is fitted an apertured cage member 14. In Fig. 1 the assembly comprising the plug 4, the sleeve 11 and the cage 14, are mounted at an angle in the cock body 1, the flange 13 abutting a seating 17 and the flange 12 abutting a screwed cap 7 in which is rotatably mounted the stem 6 of the plug. The stem 6 has an operating handle 16. The port 15 is open to the inlet 2 through the cage 14. Inlet pressure presses the sleeve 11 tightly against the plug 4. To avoid damage to the rubber sleeve, the outer edges of the apertures are slightly rounded. In Fig. 3, the plug assembly is arranged with its axis parallel to but offset from the axis of the cock body 1, the open bottom of the plug 4 engaging a counterbore in a lower inset 20 and the stem 6 of the plug passing through a projection 21 provided on an upper insert 19. The stem 6 extends into a radial chamber 22 and carries a pin 23 projection out of the chamber 22 and through a circumferential slot 24 in the cock body. The plug 4 is rotated by a ring 25 adapted to engage the end of the pin 23. The insert 20 is locked in place by a ring nut 27.
