In a method of supervising the running of a thread or yarn winding machine having automatic spool changing mechanism and thread tying means, the interruptions in the winding operation caused by thread breakages and by thread tying failures are automatically de-. tected, the detection of a predetermined number of thread breakages automatically initiating remedial action to remove the cause of said breakages and the detection of a predetermined number of tying failures automatically operating a warning device. In the arrangement shown movement of the feeler 6 in consequence of thread failure closes the contacts 14 and 22. The latch 31 is withdrawn from disc 32 and the shaft 36 is set in motion. This causes the package 3 to be lifted from the driving drum 2 and initiates a thread tying operation in known manner. At the same time a thread break is indicated on instrument 27. After the thread tying operation has been completed the knotted thread is tested by the feeler 7 and should it fail contacts 16 and 16a are closed and a faulty thread tying operation is recorded on the instrument 47. After a predetermined number of thread breakages the pointer of instrument 27 engages the contact 28 and, through the circuit 29, 30, changing of the supply bobbin is initiated. The instrument 27 may be adapted to indicate the number of breakages in a single supply bobbin or in a number of such bobbins. In the case of the single bobbin the pointer is caused to return to its zero position after bobbin changing. It can thus be used to give an indication of the rate of occurrence of thread breakages. Should a predetermined number of thread tying failures occur the pointer 48 of instrument 47 engages the contact 49 and operates a warning device 46. Repeated tying failures are prevented from operating the thread breakage instrument by the electromagnet 44 breaking the thread breakage circuit. Further means may be provided by which should the thread from the supply bobbin be missing or should the supply bobbin have insufficient thread thereon to complete a new winding-on spool the supply bobbin is automatically changed for a new one.
