Abstract

An emulsion, which imparts a high degree of corrosion resistance to acid-pickled steel strip dipped therein, comprises a major proportion of water and a minor proportion of a soluble oil composition comprising a major proportion of lubricating oil, a minor proportion of one or more emulsifying agents and 0.2-5 per cent by weight, based on the total soluble oil composition of a metal alkyl dithiocarbamate. The lubricating oil is preferably mineral oil while the dithiocarbamate may be zinc dibutyl dithiocarbamate. Suitable ionic emulsifying agents are oil-soluble metal petroleum sulphonates or naphthenates, but it is preferred to use at least two non-ionic emulsifying agents, one of which is more oil-soluble than water-soluble and another is more water-soluble than oil-soluble. The polyoxyethylene derivatives of long chain fatty acid esters of hexitol anhydrides such as sorbitan, or the polyoxyethylene derivatives of alkylated phenols, particularly sorbitan monooleate, monostearate, monolaurate or monopalmitate, may be employed as the non-ionic emulsifying agent which is more water-soluble than oil-soluble. Long-chain fatty acid esters of nona-ethylene glycol or of lower polyethylene glycols, particularly the monooleates of nona- or tri-ethylene glycol, may be employed as the non-ionic emulsifying agent which is more oil-soluble than water-soluble. The soluble oil composition may also contain a minor proportion of an alkylolamine salt of an acid of phosphorus, particularly triethanolamine phosphate. In the examples, aqueous emulsions are prepared from soluble oil compositions consisting of mineral lubricating oil, zinc dibutyl dithiocarbomate and either (i) sodium mahogany sulphonates, naphthenic acids, caustic soda, water, diethylene glycol, sodium benzoate and silicone antifoaming agent, or (ii) oleic acid, triethanolamine, triethylene glycol monooleate, the polyoxyethylene derivative of alkylated phenols known as "Lissapol NX" (the word "Lissapol" is a Registered Trade Mark) and water, or a blend of (i) and (ii). Tests are described in which the compositions of the examples are compared with similar compositions from which the zinc dibutyl dithiocarbamate has been omitted. According to the Provisional Specification, corrosion inhibitors other than metal alkyl dithiocarbamates may be employed, for example guanidine, mercaptobenzthiazole, urea, alkylated ureas, thiourea and alkylated thioureas such as 2-ethyl thiourea and ethylene thiourea.
