Abstract
Free-flowing granular fluxes for use in submerged arc welding containing unreacted acid and basic oxide materials in such proportions that at least 75 per cent conversion to the material having fluxing properties occurs under the heat of the arc, are formed by mixing the ingredients and agglomerating the mixture by means of a binder in a rotary kiln. In an example, roasted manganese ore, silica, fluorspar and silicomanganese are moistened with an aqueous solution of sodium silicate and agglomerated in a rotary kiln at 1200-1400 DEG F. Other oxides such as iron and titanium oxides and alumina may be used and the silicate binder may be formed in situ by reaction between sodium carbonate and silica at 1800 DEG F; alternatively, potassium silicate may be used. Metallic alloying ingredients, e.g. Fe-Mo, Fe-V, Fe-Cr may be included. Specifications 691,527, 692,772, and 692,839 are referred to.
