Abstract

739,244. Cooling disc brakes. WELLMAN & CO., S. K. Jan. 19, 1954 [Feb. 10, 1953], No. 1603/54. Class 103 (1). In a disc brake, particularly for aircraft, the brake is cooled by means of water being injected under pressure into a closed annular chamber within the brake and thence through slots and grooves in the coacting friction surfaces to atmosphere. In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 1, a wheel 2 is mounted on a stub axle 1 fitted with a radially extending brake flange 1a to which reaction members 5 and 6 are rigidly secured by bolts. In the annular channel-like space provided by members 5 and 6 are arranged a plurality of brake discs comprising four plain steel discs 8 which are provided with a series of notches to receive lugs of reaction member 5 to permit axial movement of the discs 8. The discs 8 are also formed with a plurality of radial slots which are open at their inner ends and permit a substantial amount of circumferential expansion and contraction of the discs without lateral distortion. In the spaces between the discs 8 are three co-operating brake discs 9 each comprising a steel core and provided on its two sides with sintered metallic friction facings 11. The discs 9 are driven by the cylindrical flange 12 rigidly secured to the web of the rotatable wheel 2 by means of lugs which also permit axial movement of the discs 9. The brake discs 9 are formed with radial slots similar to the discs 8 and the facings 11 are also formed with a circumferential series of radial and concentric grooves. An annular hydraulic plunger 14 mounted in an annular chamber 5b of the reaction member 5 serves to compress and release the pack of friction discs 8 and 9 to apply and release the brake. The plunger 14 is actuated by hydraulic pressure fluid supplied through passage 5c which communicates through tube 16 with the mastercylinder system. A series of spring clips 17 mounted on the reaction member 5 serve to disengage the plunger 14 and hence the brake discs when the hydraulic pressure is released. Cooling water may be injected under pressure into chamber 18, via passages 21, 22 from a header 19 which is supplied through pipe 20. This water in chamber 18 is then supplied through the radial slots in the discs 8 and 9 and through the radial and concentric grooves in the friction facings 11 to cool the friction surfaces and then emerges as steam through the annular space 23 surrounding the outer edges of the friction discs 8 and 9 to atmosphere. The cooling water is only supplied when either the pressure in the hydraulic supply pipe 16 rises above a predetermined figure or if the temperature of the brake discs, as measured by a thermocouple, rises above a predetermined figure. Details of both such control systems are described and illustrated in the Specification. Specification 530,904, [Group XXII], is referred to.
