A coiler for metal strip comprises a drum on to which the strip is coiled and a number of guiding and forming rollers grouped around the drum and linked together to form a flexible roller chain which can envelope the drum when brought close to the latter and can be retracted as a whole into an inoperative position away from the drum by means attached to the opposite ends of the roller chain. Guiding and forming rollers 17, loosely mounted on axles 18, are spaced around a collapsible coiler drum 13 as described in Specification 738,387 to which reference is made, and are connected together by links 20 at each end of the axles 18 to form a flexible roller chain. This chain is moved from an inoperative position in which it rests on a curved tray 36 to a position in which, during the initial coiling, it closely encircles the drum 13, by link means 31, 32 actuated by fluid-pressure means 25 and by fluid-pressure means 34, attached to its ends. The central roller 17 is guided in this movement by a radial guide 35. Each roller 17 has a reduced end 171 which rolls on a flange 19 on the coiler drum 13 to rotate the rollers 17 at a slightly higher peripheral speed than that of the drum, a roller 23 loosely mounted on the axle 18 at the other end of the roller 17 being supported by an extension 121 of the drum 13. Strip is fed to the coiler through a channel 38 having a pivoted cover carrying a flanged guiding roller 43 and swung by fluid actuated means 39, the roller 43 also serving to flatten out the tail end of the strip.
