738,630. Colour filters. HERAEUS QUARZSCHMELZE GES. Nov. 30, 1953 [Nov. 29, 1952], No. 33178/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 97 (1). [Also in Groups XXIII and XL (a)] A gas-discharge lamp envelope comprises two layers fused together-the outer layer being a quartz glass containing substances which selectively absorb portions of the ultra-violet range, and the inner layer is quartz glass without these substances. The inner layer protects the filter layer against premature discoloration and devitrification under the action of the vapour ions. The substances for adding to the quartz which is to form the outer layer are selected according to what particular wavelengths are to be absorbed, and the total amount of the additions is less than 0.25 per cent. The substances include oxides (and some carbides or nitrides) of Al, Ti, Zr, Ce, Th, Fe, Co, Zn, Cd, Sn, Bi, Ag and alkaline earths, or some of these metals, instead of their oxides, and copper. The amounts range from 0.003 to 0.2 per cent of the quartz. The invention is also applicable to light-filter plates, e.g. for optical purposes or for observation glasses for high-temperature furnaces.
