Abstract

737,801. Digital electric calculating apparatus ; statistical apparatus. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Nov. 26, 1953 [Dec. 2, 1952], No. 30517/52. Class 106 (1). [Also in Group XL (b)] Apparatus for reading information from a punched or similarly marked member, comprises means for moving the member, means for sweeping a beam of light in a direction opposite to the direction of motion of the member, and a light-sensitive device for receiving light passing through punched holes or similar lighttransmitting indications in the member whereby electrical pulses representing the information recorded on the member are generated. Digital information is recorded in a tape 1, Fig. 1, by punched holes spaced along its length, the tape being fed towards the left by a winch 4. Mirrors 12 and 14 moved by electromagnets 15 and 16, respectively, cause a beam of light from a source 10 to be scanned along the tape in a direction opposite to the movement of the tape. This gives rise to a series of signals at a photocell 9 which represent input data for a digital computor. In addition to this data, further indications on the tape which control the feeding winch 4 are picked up by another photocell 20. More than one line of holes may be punched in the tape and several items of digital information may be read by a row of photo-cells simultaneously. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), a rotating polygonal mirror drum is used to scan the light beam along the record tape, and a third photo-cell is used to pick up an initiating signal. This signal is used to gate the result of the next complete scan into the computor. In a third embodiment the light source 10, Fig. 4, is located within a transparent cylinder 32 over which the data tape is passed. A slotted drum 34, rotating in a direction opposite to the motion of the tape, provides for the scanning action, signals being picked up by photo-cells 9, 20 and 24, as before. All embodiments may be modified to deal with punched cards instead of punched tape. Specification 717,114 is referred to.
