737,598. Ball mills. PODSZUS, E. March 9, 1953, No. 6481/53. Class 59. [Also in Group XXXV] In a process of continuously producing fine powders of uniform composition, e.g. laminar metal powders for bronze and like pigments, in a mill provided with means for discharging the flattened material therefrom, the feed of material to the mill is regulated in relation to the total weight of the mill and its contents so as to maintain the weight of material in the mill substantially constant. Apparatus for carrying out the process comprises a beam frame 1, Fig. 1, which is pivoted for tilting movement on knife edges 2, the mill 3 and its driving motor 5 being mounted on opposite sides of the pivot, and material to be flattened being fed to the mill from a container 9 by means of a screw conveyer 14 driven by a motor 8 the circuit to which includes a switch 10 which is connected, by means of a rod 36, to a beam 34 of the frame, the arrangement being such that when the beam 34 tilts upwardly corresponding to an overload of material in the mill, the switch is opened to interrupt the feed to the mill. The switch is preferably a tilting-type mercury switch, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown). The frame comprises two levers 41, 42 connected to each other by means of two tubular beams 34, 51. The weight of the mill and its contents is balanced by weights 18 additional to the motor 5. Abutments 6 limit the tilting of the beam frame. The material is circulated through the mill by means of a blower 23 and piping which is connected to the inlet and outlet of the mill by means of flexible sleeves 17. Separators 21, 22 are provided. Alternatively, the switch 10 may be omitted and the beam frame used to control the speed of the motor 8 e.g. by means of variable resistances. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the beam frame is pivoted on a second frame which is pivoted on a base, the motor driving the mill being mounted on the base and driving a gear which meshes with a gear on the mill, the line of engagement of the gears being in alignment with the knife edges by which the beam frame is pivoted on the second frame.
