Abstract
737,585. Whips and hunting crops. ZAIR, Ltd., G. & J. Oct. 26, 1953 [Nov. 8, 1952], No. 28197/52. Class 62. A flexible and resilient whip core is formed by longitudinally - arranged glass fibres which are permanently bonded together, e.g. by a synthetic resin or plastic, the volumes of glass and bonding materials being substantially equal. Glass fibres of between 0.015 and 0.020 mm. diameter are preferably used and are incorporated in a whip core 10, Fig. 3, of circular cross - section which tapers from a diameter of 8 to 10 mm. to between 2 and 3 mm. over a length of 660 to 760 mm. The core is covered by a single spiral layer of cotton, hemp, flax or nylon twine 11 which is bonded to the core during manufacture by application over a tacky core-coating of pitch pine. The twine layer is then impregnated with a clear synthetic rubber solution and covered by spiral layers of paper 12 and outer braiding 13. The same construction is used in a hunting crop, Fig. 5, which has a uniform diameter of about 9 mm., the crop handle being threaded on to a hollow cane plug secured to the core by pitch pine. In an application to trotting and polo whips which may have a maximum diameter of about 5 mm., the butt end of the core may be reinforced by external cane splicing 20, 21, Fig. 7. At the striking end of the whip, the overall diameter may be reduced by terminating the twine layer short of the end and continuing with a layer of flax tow. Alternatively, the twine may be omitted and the flax tow layer used throughout.
