Abstract
737,499. Automatic volume control. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. April 1, 1953 [May 14, 1952], No. 9069/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 40 (4). In an automatic volume control arrangement of the type in which the gain of an amplifier, through which both the signal waves and a pilot wave pass, is controlled by the rectified pilot wave, the output current of the amplifier controls the resistance of a variable resistor which forms part of a device separate from the amplifier, which device provides an additional control of the signal level. In a carrier system in which the carrier is transmitted, the carrier may serve as the pilot wave. In the embodiment described, the variable resistor is an indirectly heated thermistor, the heating coil of which is in the cathode lead of a variable-gain valve of the amplifier. The pilot wave is extracted from the output of this valve, rectified and applied as bias to control the gain of the valve. The resistance element of the thermistor forms part of a variable attenuation network which is connected on the input or the output side of the amplifier, and which controls the signal level in the same sense as does the variable-gain amplifier. Such a network may be replaced by another amplifier, the resistance element being connected in its negative feedback path. In a multi-channel system in which each channel of a group of channels includes a pilot-controlled variable-gain amplifier, one of these amplifiers may control the variable resistor which is connected in the negative feedback path of a group amplifier serving the group of channels.
