Abstract

737,132. Tents. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. April 9, 1953 [April 9, 1952], No. 9666/53. Class 20 (1). A shelter, forming a closed structure made of foldable gas-tight material with double walls 11, 12 enclosing an insulating layer, has a floor 10 secured to the walls to form a gas-tight enclosure, means for inflating the structure and means for evacuating the space between the walls, 11, 12. Walls 11, 12 may be made of rubberized or plastic impregnated fabric, polyethylene or polystyrene. The floor 10 may be wood, metal, heavy fabric or plastic. The insuiating layer is preferably glass fibres but may be kapok, cork or the like. The space between walls 11, 12 may be divided into compartments, as shown, each individually gastight and connected to a manifold 15 connected to a vacuum pump 20. A pump 17 forces air through an intake pipe 16 to the interior of the structure. When setting up the structure, the interior is inflated by pump 17 and then the space between walls 11 and 12 is evacuated by vacuum pump 20 until the structure is rigid, when pump 17 is stopped. The interior of the structure may be entered through double door air lock 19. When collapsing the structure, if manifold 15 is flexible, the vacuum is only partly broken and the structure is folded up, after which the vacuum is re-applied to reduce its volume still further.
