Abstract
736,073. Glass manufacture. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 30, 1952 [Oct. 1, 1951], No. 22824/51. Class 56. A tellurium containing glass having a high coefficient of thermal expansion, a high refractive index and dielectric strength and which transmits infra-red radiation freely consists of less than 10 per cent by weight of SiO 2 , at least 15 per cent by weight of TeO 2 and at least 5 per cent by weight of one or more of the following: LiO 2 , Na 2 O, CuO, BaO, PbO, MgO, CdO, B 2 O 3 , La 2 O 3' Bi 2 O 3' V 2 O 5 , P 3 O 5 , As 2 O 5 , Cb 2 O 5' Ta 2 O 5' TiO 2 , GeO 3 , ThO 2 , MnO 2 , SeO 2 , CeO 2 , MoO 3 , WO 3 and ZnF 2 . Clear tellurite glass is obtained by making the melt, for example of a batch of 100 grams of a mixture of TeO 2 -20 per cent and PbO-80 per cent in a silica crucible so that about 4 per cent of SiO 2 is introduced into the composition. Opaque, black tellurite glasses which transmit infra-red rays as freely as the clear glass are made by including sufficient of the oxides of copper or manganese in the compositions.
