Members 12, each carrying a plurality, e.g. 40, of type elements 13, are moved into printing position in relation to a platen 10 carrying a paper web 11, so that, when a selected element 13 is struck by a hammer 15 through an interponent 14, an impression is formed on the paper. The type elements are selected under control of a statistical record card by control stops CS, e.g. 12 in number, in accordance with the set up of the stops as determined by the data recorded on the card. A, B, C constitute a first of two groups of control stops and numerals 1-9 comprise a second group. These stops CS are movable vertically in known manner in accordance with the record on a card by an element 18 actuated by the sensing mechanism and are all restored to inactive position by elements 19 common to all the rows of stops and reciprocable by a member 20. The type elements 13 are differentially set by a device which comprises a pair of longitudinally movable toothed racks 21, 22 coupled by a freely rotatable pinion 24 carried by a cage 23. The member 20 is secured to the rack 21. A first abutment member having three abutments 30, 31, 32 is secured to the cage 23 so that these abutments may engage respectively control stops A, B, C of the first group, if stop A, B or C is raised by the sensing of the record card into path of the abutment, before the differential device is moved from its starting position. An abutment 33 on the rack 22 slides in a groove in a plate 17 which, with plate 16, supports the control stops for vertical movement. When the differential device is moved from its starting position, the abutment 33 may be engaged by any one of stops 1-9 according to which stop is sensed. In the fully forward position, abutment 33 engages a stop 34. A restoring element 35 and frame members 35a are supported on arms 36 connected by links 37 with a rocking arm 38 secured to rock-shaft 39 and are moved in time relation to the main driving shaft of the machine. The element 35 acts against spring 42 to return rack 21 to starting position. When the element 35 is moved from starting position, frame members 35a move with it and initial tension in the springs 42 is maintained until the rack 21 is arrested. A draw member 54, integral with a sliding block 47 supported to reciprocate in the direction of the length of rack 21, has a roller 55 located in a forked member 56 secured to a rock-shaft 52. A cam 51 moves the member 54 slightly just after a knife-edged aligner element 44 has been engaged in teeth 43 of rack 21 so as to move rack 21 until type elements 13 are accurately aligned. An eliminator stop 57, which is actuated by the element 18 coupled to one of the control stops A, B, C and set up by sensing of a control hole in the record card, engages a recess 60 in the rack 22. The control stop selected is simultaneously interposed in the path of abutment 31 on cage 23 to render the differential device for any particular column inoperative and prevent it from following the restoring element 35 on its next forward movement.
