Abstract

In melt-spinning or extrusion apparatus in which molten material is passed through a filter pack, the plate supporting the pack has a number of grooves, preferably intersecting on the surface facing the pack, which lead to one or more apertures in the supporting plate through which molten material passes to the spinneret or extrusion die. The molten material may be a linear condensation polymer such as polyethylene terephthalate or nylon. The plate may be provided with heating means and may also have grooves on the side facing the spinneret or die. A coarse wire gauze may be located between a fine wire gauze supporting the filter pack and the plate. The grooves on the surface of the plate facing the filter pack may be arranged at right angles, concentrically or radially. In the example polyethylene terephthalate yarn is melt-spun using an apparatus in which a plate provided with grooves 1/16 inch wide, 1/16 inch deep and 1/8 inch apart is located below the sand pack assembly so that the grooved face of the plate directly supports the bottom 50-mesh gauze of the sand-retaining gauze assembly. The intersections of the grooves each lead to an aperture drilled through the entire thickness of the plate, and these apertures communicate with the holes in the spinneret. The rate of pressure-rise with time is one-fifth of that found when an ungrooved plate is used.
