A pyrophoric lighter comprises a body portion 1 to which end-plates 2 and 5 are secured in a fluid-tight manner and the body portion is made up of separate sheet or strip material side walls 6 secured to end walls 7. As shown in Fig. 2 the end walls 7 engage recesses 8 in the side walls 6 and are soldered thereto at 9, or, Fig. 3, the recesses 8 are formed by attaching a narrow strip 12 to the side walls 6. Fig. 4 shows the side walls 6 soldered or welded in recesses 13 formed in the flat faces of the end wall 7 while Fig. 6 shows the side walls 6 soldered on a moulded or cast end wall 7. In a modification, Fig. 5, the ends 14 of the side walls 6 are turned inwardly and secured to the end wall 7. Further modifications, Figs. 7-13 (not shown), on the lines shown in Fig. 5 are described in which the ends 14 either overlap, abut or are dovetailed and the end walls 7 are secured in recesses in the walls 6 in a manner similar to that shown in Fig. 2. The walls 6, 7 may be of any suitable materials such as metal, glass or synthetic resin. One or both of the end walls 7 may be provided with a portion movable. relative thereto or slidably mounted on the walls 6 to act as a windshield or to hold the operating mechanism in a predetermined position. The moulded or cast end walls 7 may be hollow to accommodate spare flints, refills or a cleaning brush or house a fixed or movable windshield. The outer surface of the end walls 7 may be‹ shaped or decorated in any desired manner and the side walls 6 may be plain, decorated in any desired manner or coated with enamel, leather or the like.
