Abstract
735,189. Turning-gear. PECK, W. J. July 8, 1953 [April 8, 1952]. No. 8956/52. Class 7(5). [Also in Group XXIV] A centrifugal friction clutch (not shown), such as that described in Specification 735,187, used in an inertia-type engine starter,is provided with adjusting means to select one of two or more predetermined engaging speeds. The control shown is a part of that of Specification 735,187, wherein the outward movement of a masscarrier 45 about pivots 44, on a driving member 41 turns a clutch-control sleeve coaxial with the driving member, and, is opposed by a spring- loaded detent 67 also carried by the driving member 41 and engaging notches 69 in the masscarrier 45, as well as by a main loading-spring. The loading spring 68 of the detent 67 is compressed to either of two pre-set loads giving two different engaging speeds, by turning a member 75, in face-cam engagement with a non-rotary spring-abutment 70, the load being pre-selected, when the driving member begins to rotate, by thrusting inwards one of two connected stationary pins 80 or 81 into the path of a sector 79 fast with the cam 75 which latter is thereby caused to turn one step in one or other direction to select the appropriate spring loading. Alternatively the control may unload the detent or move it axially to two or more positions where it engages notches of different depths or a plain part of the member connected to the mass, or mass loading may be changed by one or more additional controllable springs.
