Abstract

Textile materials of synthetic linear aromatic polyesters, e.g polyethylene terephthalate, are dyed or colour-printed by applying at least one primary aromatic amine and at least one salicyl-arylamide of the formula <FORM:0735119/IV (c)/1> wherein X is hydrogen, halogen or a methyl radical and R is an aryl radical of the benzene or naphthalene series, and subsequently diazotizing the amine and coupling it in situ with the salicyl-arylamide. The radical R may be a -, or b -naphthyl or phenyl either unsubstituted or substituted with, for example, halogen or with alkyl, alkyloxy, nitro, phenyl or acylaminophenyl (e.g. salicylaminophenyl or substituted salicylaminophenyl) groups. Specified salicylarylamides, which may be employed in admixture or in admixture with other coupling components such as 2 : 3-hydroxy-naphthoic acid, are salicyl-anilide, salicyl-a - and b -naphthylamides, salicyl-o-, m- and p-toluidides, salicyl-o-, m- and p-anisidides, salicyl-o-, m- and p-nitroanilides, salicyl-o-, m- and p-chloroanilides, salicyl - 21 : 51 - dichloranilide, salicyl - 31 - chloro - 61 - methoxyanilide, salicyl - 41 - phenylanilide, 5-chlorosalicylanilide, 2-hydroxy-3-methyl - benzoic - anilide, 2 - hydroxy - 3 - methylbenzoic - 31 - methylanilide, 2-hydroxy - 3-methylbenzoic-21-methoxyanilide, 2-hydroxy-3 - methylbenzoic - 31 - methoxyanilide, 2 - hydroxy - 3 - methylbenzoic - 41 - chloroanilide, 2 - hydroxy - 3 - methylbenzoic - 21 - nitroanilide, 2 - hydroxy - 4 - methylbenzoic - 21 - methoxyanilide, 2-hydroxy-5-methylbenzoic-anilide and 1 : 4 - bis - salicylamido - benzene. Specified amines, which may be employed in admixture, are p-nitroaniline and the monoazo compound obtained by coupling diazotized oxalyl-p-phenylene diamine with 3-amino-4-methoxy-toluene and hydrolysing off the oxalyl radical. The components may be applied from aqueous solution or dispersion and their rate of diffusion through the textile may be increased by the addition of, for example, diphenyl.
