Abstract

734,876. Latches. PARKES & SONS, Ltd., J., and BUTTER, F. J. Feb. 22, 1954 [Feb. 21, 1953], No. 4893/53. Class 44. Relates to a latch operating mechanism of the ''palace motion type," rotation of the follower 11 in one direction causing withdrawal of the bolt 15 against the action of a spring 31, by means of a follower horn 12 engaging an abutment 14 of the bolt tail 15, whilst rotation of the follower in the opposite direction causes the bolt 16 to be withdrawn, indirectly, by means of a follower horn 13 engaging an arm 19 of a crank lever 17, pivoted at 18, the other arm 20 of the crank lever engaging another abutment 21 on the bolt tail 15. According to the invention spring loading means operate directly on an additional follower horn 29 and also on the crank lever arm 19 to oppose rotation of the follower and cranked lever in the directions which cause the withdrawal of the bolt 16. As shown, the spring-loading means comprises a member 22 rockable on a fixed pivot 23 and having abutments 24, 25 engaging the horn 29 and the arm 19 respectively. The member 22 is urged to rotate anticlockwise by a spring 26. The abutments 14 and 21 on the bolt tail are duplicated at 14* and 21* to facilitate reversal of the bolt 16. In another two embodiments the spring-loading means is in the form of a sliding member urged by a helical compression spring and in one of these embodiments the horns 12, 13 of the follower are formed in one piece. In a further two embodiments, wherein the horns 12, 13 are formed in one piece, the follower horn 29 and the crank lever arm 19 are acted upon by separate spring-loading means, either in the form of two scroll springs anchored to a fixed stump, or by two spring plungers in a member rockable on a fixed pivot. According to the Provisional Specification the crank lever may have a pivoted operating connection with the bolt and be spring-loaded to shoot the bolt and the follower may then be operated upon by a spring-loaded member which directly opposes turning of the follower in both directions, is spring-urged toward the follower boss arid straddles the boss to co-operate with diametrically-opposed horns on the follower.
