Abstract

734,502. Embossing machines. MASSON SEELEY & CO., Ltd. March 6, 1953 [March 6, 1952], No. 5903/52. Class 100 (2). In an embossing machine the work is supported during a marking operation on a platform mounted resiliently on the lower platen of the press and shaped so that a slot is formed between the platform and the lower platen, the same or other work also being passed through the slot for a supplementary operation effected by means mounted on the upper face of the slot and on part of the lower platen. As shown in Fig. 1 the press comprises an upper platen 3 mounted on a vertically reciprocable plunger in head 2 and a lower platen 4 adjustable vertically on the upright 1. The main marking operation is effected by dies on the platen 3 and the upper surface of the platform 13, pigment carrying foil 21 being fed from spool 5 and taken up on spool 6 and a strip 22 forming the work to be marked being fed with the foil 21 between the platen 3 and platform 13 over guide rollers 12. Foil 21 and strip 22 are fed together by nip rollers actuated by a ratchet driven through lever 9 and link 10 from the reciprocating mechanism of the press as described in the Specification 728,391. The work having been marked is returned through the slot 16 beneath the platform 13 to a take-up spool 8. As shown in Fig. 2 the platform 13 is recessed in its under face and mounted on blocks 14 of rubber or the like (or springs) which are compressed as the upper platen 3 moves downwardly against the upper surface of the platform. A toothed perforator 17 secured to the lower platen 4 is arranged to perforate the strip 22 each time the platen 3 descends. A backing pad 18, e.g. of cardboard is secured to the upper surface of the slot to receive the teeth of the perforator after they have passed through the strip 22. As the strip moves through the press the main marking and supplementary operations are thereby effected simultaneously on different parts of the strip. The supplementary operation may also be a marking operation effected by dies mounted on each side of the slot 16. Pigment foil may be fed through the slot for this purpose. The means effecting the supplementary operation may be adjustable on the lower platen for registration, and the resilient support blocks may be provided with means, e.g. screwthreaded distance pieces for varying the height between the platform or the lower platen may be heated. The supplementary operation may alternatively result in another transfer marking in a different colour; an embossed impression; the marked portion having parts cut away or the marked part being cut out of the strip.
