734,236. Rock drills. DEILMANN BERGBAU GES., C. June 3, 1953, No. 15342/53. Class 85. In a method of making bore holes of large cross-section in rock and the like, cutting tools are moved in curved paths such that they have radial and axial components of movement superposed on each other, whereby the tools strike repeatedly against the rock. A shaft 1 driven by a motor 8 carries eccentric bushes on which are freely mounted frusto-conical carrier members carrying cutting tools 5 at their peripheries. The axes of the eccentric bushes are tilted so as to give a wobbling motion to the carriers. The lowest carrier comprises a plurality of discs 6. Guide rollers 10, 12 are also arranged on the shaft 1, the rollers 10, 12 being eccentrically mounted and the roller 11 concentrically mounted. A rotary drilling tool 7 may be used to produce the pilot hole. The carrier member may comprise crossed arms or may be elliptical, Fig. 1d. The cutting tools may form one or more continuous cutting rings on each carrier member, or the tools may be arranged in the form of spirals. An aftercutter may be provided behind a group of cutting tools. For boring a hole upwardly and making use of a pilot bore hole extending completely through the rock, the device may be supported and feed pressure applied thereto by means of a rope.
