Abstract

Merocyanine dyes of the general formula <FORM:0733731/IV (c)/1> wherein R is a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group, R1 is an alkyl group of at least 7 carbon atoms, R2 is H, an alkyl group or an acyl group, n is 1 or 2 and Z and Q1 each complete a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic nucleus, are prepared by using the long-chain intermediates described in Specification 532,098 in the processes for producing merocyanino dyes disclosed in Specifications 485,110, 519,895 and 528,803, and in U.S.A. Specification 2,263,757. R may be methyl, ethyl, n-propyl or b -hydroxyethyl, R1 may be n-heptyl, n-octyl, n-nonyl, n-decyl or n-lauryl, R2 may be methyl, ethyl, phenyl or p-tolyl, Z may complete nuclei of the thiazole, oxazole, selenazole, thionaphtheno-71 : 61 : 4 : 5 thiazole, thiazoline, quinoline, 3 : 3 dialkylindolenine, or pyridine series and Q1 may complete nuclei of the thiazolone, thiazoledione, rhodanine, oxazolone, 2-thio-2 : 4-oxazoledione, pseudohydantoin, 2 - alkylmercapto - 5 - imidazolone, pyrazolone, oxindole, barbituric acid, thiobarbituric acid, quinolone, quinoxalone, 3-phenomorpholone or 1 : 4 : 2-benzothiazine-3-one series, a number of derivatives of such nuclei being specified including 3-(2-benzothiazyl) rhodanine, 2-ethylmercapto-4-thiazolone, 2 - diphenylamino - 4 - thiazolone, and 2-n-propylmercapto-5-imidazolone.
