Abstract

733,593. Directive radio systems. NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION, Inc. Aug. 29,1953, No. 23951/53. Class 40 (7). Means for mounting an aerial system 50, with associated scanning and other components in an eyeball-shaped casing 51 so that they can be moved about two mutually perpendicular axes comprises a rigid cylindrical support 2 upon a diameter of which the system is mounted for movement about one axis by means of shafts 1 and 1a and roller support devices 10 and 11 for the cylindrical support so that rotation is possible about a second axis. A pulley 4 is rigidly attached to shaft 1a and a second pulley 3 is coupled to shaft 1 through reversing gear (Fig. 2, not shown). Continuous cable 5 is wound around and attached to pulleys 3 and 4 and also passes round windlasses 6 and 7 rigidly mounted (e.g. on the carrying aircraft's frame) and rotatable independently by means of hydraulic motors 8 and 9. The cable 5 passes round the sides of the cylindrical support in fairleads (Fig. 4, not shown). Operation of the motors 8 and 9 at the required speeds and in the required directions will move the system directly to any required position. For control purposes a gear 20 attached to shaft 1a outside pulley 4 is used to drive duration pick-off 21 by means of pinion 21a and a toothed segment 16 on the support 2 drives azimuth pick-off 18 by means of pinion 17. The difference between a voltage representing the desired azimuth position and the output of unit 18 is fed in the same sense to combining units controlling motors 8 and 9 whilst the difference between a voltage representing the desired elevation position and the output of pick-off 21 is fed in opposed polarity to the combining units (Fig. 5, not shown).
