Abstract
733,185. Glass manufacture. CLARK, C. W. Dec. 11, 1953 [Oct. 8, 1952; Oct. 24, 1952], Nos. 25265/52 and 26798/52. Class 56. An article, e.g. a tumbler, having a closed base is formed from tubing C by presenting the tubing to a reciprocable plunger part A<SP>1</SP> of a rotating mandrel A, severing the length of one blank by a cutter E, pressing the glass over the tapered part of the mandrel by a pusher F leaving a portion C<SP>2</SP> upstanding from the tapered part for turning over, when the part A<SP>1</SP> is lowered, to form the base, by a tool G. The base is finally formed by a plunger-like die and is ejected from the mandrel by the plunger part A<SP>1</SP> on which it is cooled by an air blast. A decorating material subsequently burnt on may be applied to the article by transfer wheels K, K<SP>1</SP>, K<SP>2</SP>; and the mandrel may have a groove in the surface supplied with compressed air for blowing an ornamentation in relief on the article. The centre of the base may be heated for the fixing of a glass leg. The mandrels are mounted so as to be indexed from station to station. According to the second Provisional Specification, the roller applying the decorating material may be moved axially relatively to the tumbler to give a wavy effect.
