Abstract

2 : 2 : 4 - Trimethyl - 1 : 2 : - dihydroquinoline is polymerized with the aid of a non-oxidizing mineral acid (e.g. hydrochloric) and the polymer so obtained treated with sulphuric acid and sodium nitrite to give the N-nitroso derivative.ALSO:Aniline and acetone are condensed in the presence of benzenesulphonic acid to give 2 : 2 : 4 - trimethyl - 1 : 2 - dihydroquinoline, purified by fractional distillation. The product is reduced to the tetrahydro compound by catalytic hydrogenation in alcohol solution with Raney nickel and 1-nitroso-2 : 2 : 4-trimethyl-1 : 2 : 3 : 4-tetrahydroquinoline obtained there-from by treatment with sodium nitrite and dilute sulphuric acid. The Provisional Specification describes also the preparation of 1-nitroso - 2 : 2 : 4 - trimethyl - 1 : 2 - dihydroquinoline.ALSO:In a process for vulcanizing rubber there is used as retarder an N-nitroso derivative of either (a) a polymer of 2 : 2 : 4-trimethyl-1 : 2-dihydroquinoline formed from the monomer with the aid of a non-oxidizing mineral acid (e.g. hydrochloric), or (b) 2 : 2 : 4-trimethyl-1 : 2 : 3 : 4-tetrahydroquinoline. Such retarders are particularly useful to prevent scorching of natural or synthetic rubber stock containing reinforcing furnace carbon block. They may be used to the extent of 1/4 -1 per cent by weight of rubber present. Examples give the following compositions: (1) smoked rubber sheet, carbon, zinc oxide, softener, anti-oxidant, stearic acid, sulphur, accelerator and one of the retarders of the invention; (2) pale crepe rubber, blanc fixe, zinc oxide, stearic acid, sulphur, accelerator and the retarder. The softener, antioxidant and accelerators are referred to by their trade names, an additional accelerator being mentioned in the Provisional Specification. The latter also gives an example of the use of the N-nitroso derivative of 2 : 2 : 4-trimethyl-1 : 2-dihydroquinoline itself as retarder.
