Abstract
732,360. Distance-measuring apparatus. SVENSKA AKTIEBOLAGET GASACCUMULATOR. April 25, 1952 [April 28, 1951], No. 10466/52. Class 118 (2). [Also in Groups XL (b) and XL (c)] Apparatus for measuring the distance between two points comprises a transmitter 2 and receiver 7 at one point, and a reflector at the other, the transmitter sending an intensity modulated light wave whose phase displacement at the receiver is noted in a phase comparison device 8, and measured by comparing it with the delay produced in an adjustable delay path 10 which can be substituted for the normal path. The switching means may comprise two prisms 11, 12 with alternative positions. The adjustable delay path 10 comprises a series of internally reflecting prisms 32, the number of prisms being determined by a mirror 17 and indicated by a pointer 19 and a scale 18, and a continuously adjustable length determined by a prism 21 and indicated by a pointer 22 and scale 23. In a modification the phase comparator 8 is replaced by a variable delay network 26 (Fig. 2) and a sensitivity control 25 operating on the receiver 7, the delay 26 being adjusted to bring into phase the sensitivity control and received signal, indicated by a meter 31. The modulated wave may be other than light, e.g. a radio wave, or an ultrasonic wave.
