Abstract

732,056. Grinding. KRUG, C. June 4, 1952 [Sept. 28, 1951], No. 14158/52. Class 60. An automatic grinding-wheel adjusting means for rotary table flat grinding machines is characterized in that the rotary table is provided with means to make and break an electric circuit between a grinding-wheel adjusting mechanism and a feeler-gauge actuated by oversize workpieces, so that displacement of said feeler-gauge can only effect operation of the grinding wheel adjusting mechanism when said rotary table is in a position to close said circuit. A rotatable work-table AT carries workpieces W beneath a grinding-wheel S. Spaced contacts K on the table AT co-operate with a brush 8 joined to line 101, the contacts being interconnected and joined to line 102. The circuit from line Q to line R of the mains is thus closed, when brush 8 registers with a contact K, to energize the coil of relay RW. If the feelergauge T is lifted by a workpiece W which is oversize, due to wear of the grinding-wheel, an electric current is transmitted from a current source la by way of line 1, contacts in relay RW and line 2 (thus energizing coil of relay RT2) to contacts in closed relay RT1. Current is then transmitted through line 3 to contacts in closed relay RT2 and via line 4 to operate feeding relay FR thereby energizing through lines 5, 6 an electromagnet M actuating the grinding-wheel adjusting mechanism. When brush 8 leaves contact K, relay RW returns to its non-energized position so that current will flow through line 10 to energize coil of relay RT1 and thereby open contacts of relay RT1. Coil of relay RT2 is de-energized and contacts of relay RT2 opened whereby electromagnet M is cut out of circuit and the grinding-wheel adjusting mechanism rendered inoperative. The distance between contacts K is somewhat greater than that between the gauge T and the grinding wheel S. The grinding-wheel adjusting mechanism B comprises a rotary-vane type hydraulic motor controlled by a valve operated by the electromagnet M; the rotational displacement of the vane is converted into linear motion, e.g. by worm and screw spindle drive. A switching mechanism may be provided to break the circuit between the gauge and electromagnet M despite the position of the brush 8 and contacts K.
