Abstract

The invention relates to e -amino-g -keto-caproic acid obtainable by hydrogenating the corresponding e -nitro-keto-caproic acid in an inert solvent in the presence of a hydrogenating catalyst such as Raney nickel or cobalt or a noble metal, e.g. platinum or palladium at room or elevated temperature. In examples: (1) the nitro-keto-caproic acid is hydrogenated using palladium-barium sulphate as catalyst and glacial acetic acid as solvent and the resulting amino-keto-acid is recovered in the form of its oxalate; (2) the hydrogenation is effected using methanol as solvent and the product is worked up to yield the free amino-keto-caproic acid and minor amounts of an unidentified amino-acid; the primary and secondary oxalates and the hydrochloride of the amino-keto acid are referred to. The free acid and its oxalate yield condensation products on heating, which are suitable for the production of adhesives and lacquers, e -Nitro-g -keto caproic acid is obtained by condensing furfural with nitromethane yielding 1-nitro-2-furyl-ethylene which is then boiled with concentrated hydrochloric acid.
