Abstract

730,396. Toy trains. FEINTE, H. Aug. 8, 1952, No. 19998/52. Class 132(3). [Also in Group XXX] A railway signalling system for a railway track with signals normally at danger (see Group XXX) and adaptable for toy railways comprises an L-type impedance chain connected to insulated sections 2a ...2g ... ,Fig. 1, of one rail wherein a line 4 from one pole of a source 5 feeds the parallel arms 6a ... 6g ... (resistances) of the chain, while the series arms are polarized relays 3a ... 3f ... which connect adjacent sections 2a, 2b ...2f, 2g ... the other pole of the source 5 being connected to a continuous rail 1 and the polarized relays being such as to respond only when a sufficiently high current passes therethrough on presence of a train in a section, e.g. 2d, such a current requiring ahead sections i.e. 2e, 2f to be free to clear the entry signal for such ahead section 2e. The signals consist of green and red lamps 10, 11, respectively, Fig. 4, connected in series between the rail 1 and the line 4, a resistance 12 being connected across the green lamp 10. Operation of the relay e.g. 3a to close contact 8a, short circuits the red lamp 11b so that the green lamp 10b receives sufficient current to illuminate it. When the relay is unoperated the current through the green lamp is insufficient for illumination but the current through the red lamp is sufficient for illumination. The polarized relay 3a, &c. on operation also connects power from the source 5 directly to the corresponding section 13a, &c. of the traction rail 13 . The traction power source may be a different source to the source feeding the relays and it may be a D.C. or an A.C. supply, being used at the same time to feed the signal lamps. The resistance 12 may be a relay winding, the relay operating when the red lamp is short circuited to connect up the source of traction power to the corresponding traction rail section 13a, 13b &c. The system may be used for traffic in both directions in which case an individual traction power rail or trolley wire is necessary for each direction.
