Abstract

729,439. Two-way transmission. BRITISH TELECOMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH Ltd. Nov. 20, 1952 [Dec. 17, 1951], No. 29531/51. Class 40 (4). [Also in Group XL (b)] A switching arrangement for a signalling system arranged for two-way transmission over separate conductors and employing a piece of equipment at an intermediate point in common for both directions of transmission in which a control unit arranged to respond to the signals in each direction includes a thermionic toggle device controlling a relay adapted to change over the connection of the common equipment so as to be appropriate for the direction of transmission then prevailing. In the circuit shown a positive start impulse, assuming that the normal stop condition on the line is negative, renders a valve V1 conductive and the fall in voltage across a resistance R3 renders a rectifier MR1 conducting so that a valve V2 of the toggle pair V2, V3 is cut off, and the valve V3 conducts, thus energizing the righthand winding of the relay X/2 to move its contacts x1 x2 to the position shown in which signals from a station A over the line Lla pass to the repeater R, preferably of electronic type, and over contacts x2 to the line L2b leading to the receiver of a second station B. During signalling, positive and negative impulses reach the grid of the valve V1, but will be without effect on the valve pair V2, V3 on account of the rectifier MR1. When signalling is to start from the transmitter at station B, the positive start impulse of a code signal combination on the line L1b makes V4 conducting and the fall in potential across the anode resistance R11 acts via rectifier MR2 to cut off the valve V3 so that valve V2 conducts and the current through the left-hand X winding of the relay - which reverses contacts 2 xl, x2 and signals from the line L1b pass through the repeater R and via contacts xl in its opposite position to the conductor L2a leading to the receiver of station A.
