[Also in Group XVI] Printing, writing, or marking fluids adapted to assume different colors when applied to suitably sensitised surfaces comprise a colorless fluid containing two different organic adsorbate substances both of which give a coloration on adsorption contact with one kind of inorganic absorbent substance whereas only one thereof gives a coloration with another kind of inorganic adsorbent substance. The record surface may be partly sensitised with an inorganic adsorbent substance sensitive to one of the adsorbate substances while the remainder of the surface is sensitised with an adsorbent sensitive to both the adsorbates and the marking fluid is applied selectively to either portion of the record material. Adsorbate compounds specified are malachite green lactone, N-p-nitrophenyl rhodamine B lactam, and 3, 3-bis-(p-ethylaminophenyl) phthalide while the preferred record material sensitising adsorbent substance is attapulgus clay which may be applied to paper by coating processes normal to the paper coating industry ; calcium silicate may also be used. In use with account forms the portions thereof corresponding with columns can be sensitised with different adsorbents and thus on application of the marking fluid the entries in the respective columns will appear in different colours. The adsorbate compounds are applied in solvents e.g. chlorinated diphenyl or toluene. When a marking fluid containing a mixture of malachite green lactone and N-p-nitrophenyl rhodamine B lactam is used in conjunction with attapulgus clay, which is color sensitive to both these compounds, a purplish lavender color is obtained which is the resultant of the red and blue-green colors produced by the indi. vidual compounds ; when calcium silicate is used as adsorbent the lactam compound is not changed to colored form and the resultant color is the blue-green obtained from the lactone.
