729,067. Measuring sound intensity in beehives. WOODS, E. F. Sept. 25, 1953 [Oct. 31, 1952], No. 27471/52. Drawings to Specification. Class 118 (2). Apparatus for detecting and indicating the activities of bees and conditions in beehives by analysis of the sounds produced by the bees, comprises a microphone adapted to be positioned within a hive, an amplifier connected to the output of the microphone, an indicating device connected to the output of the amplifier and frequency-discriminating means for selectively isolating the three sounds known as normal hum, hiss and warble. The embodiment described utilizes a crystal microphone of suitable size and shape to be inserted in the hive without being interfered with by the bees. This is connected to an amplifier comprising five resistance-capacity coupled pentodes, the last one of which has a meter in its anode circuit to indicate the sound level picked up' by the microphone. Three possible paths are provided between the second and third valves, any one of which may be selected by means of two ganged switches. The first path is a direct connection for detection of normal hum, about 180-190 c/s.; the second path includes a series condenser to eliminate lower frequencies and detect " hiss " of 3000 c/s. and upwards; and the third path comprises a band-pass filter network to select the " warble " which is a frequency of about 255 c/s. wavering plus or minus 35 c/s. When the selector switch is moved to the " hiss " position the gain is automatically increased. Interpretations of various combinations of these sounds are given. Instead of a meter, the indicating device may be a lamp lit by a relay in the anode circuit of the fixed valve. Transistors may be used in place of the pentode valves.
