Abstract
728,210. Damping vibrations in overhead cables. GORDON, J. Dec. 15, 1953, No. 34885/53. Class 36. A vibration damper for overhead wires comprises a lever 22 pivoted on the support 11 of adjacent spans 15, 16 and connected to each of the spans at points spaced from the support so that the ratio of the lengths a: b is sufficiently different from the ratio of the lengths d: c to cause an oscillation arising in one span to transmit to the other span an oscillation of substantially different amplitude and thereby to damp the oscillation in the first span. The ends of the lever may be connected to spans 15, 16 by flexible ties 24, 25, and the pivot 23 may be at the centre of the lever or nearer one end. Clamps 47, 48 securing the ties 24, 25 are at different distances from the support in the former case and may be equal distances from the support in the latter case. Three of the lengths a, b, c, d may be equal, the fourth being substantially different.
